HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING: Two Bobcats win tournament

Blairsville’s Drew Doak and Scott Thompson each placed first in their respective weight divisions in the annual Southmoreland Holiday Classic wrestling tournament Saturday in Alverton.

Doak beat Meyersdale’s Seth Deist, 5-3, to claim his second consecutive title at 152 pounds. Doak placed third in the tournament at 152 in his freshman campaign. Thompson, a third-place finisher at 182 as a freshman, won the 182-pound class with an 11-8 win over Valley senior Terrell Fields.

Marion Center’s Brandon Heberling placed fourth at 138. Isaac Stewart took fifth at 145, Charlie Brewer finished seventh at 182, and David Wiles placed eighth at 120.

United’s Tyler Oliver (195) and Andrew Deitman (285) each took third. Seth McLendon placed fifth at 220.

Ligonier Valley’s Dereck Croyle placed fourth at 160. Dalton Clark took sixth at 132, and Nathan Trottier finished seventh at 170.


POWERADE CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT: Derry sophomore and returning PIAA champ Micky Phillippi placed fifth at 120 pounds in the annual Powerade Christmas Tournament at Canon-McMillan High School in Canonsburg on Saturday.

Phillippi, the No. 4 seed in a deep division, got nipped by the top seed, two-time PIAA state champ and Parkland senior Ethan Lizak, 3-2, in an ultimate rideout in the semifinals. Phillippi edged Walsh Jesuit’s (Ohio) Alex Mackall, 1-0, in the fifth-place consolation match.

Derry sophomore Stone Kepple placed eighth at 126. Kepple got pinned by fourth-seeded Lucas Simpkins of Ripley, W.V., in the seventh-place consolation bout.
