HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Marion Center boys rally for win after wasting big lead
Marion Center took a double-digit lead in the first half but had to rally in the fourth quarter to beat Saltsburg, 53-47, in a Heritage Conference boys’ basketball game at home Thursday night.
Marion Center held a 10-point lead, 31-21, at halftime, but Saltsburg regrouped and stormed into the lead behind Steve Richards. Richards scored 13 of his game-high 23 points in the third quarter, and the Trojans outscored Marion Center 20-7 to take a 41-38 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Stingers got back on track in time to pull out the win behind Todd Fetsko, who made 11 of 15 free throw attempts in the second half and finished with 21 points. Marion Center outscored Saltsburg 15-6 in the fourth quarter while making 7 of 10 free throw attempts.
“They went man-to-man in the third quarter and we got sloppy with the ball and went cold at the same time,” Marion Center assistant coach Nathan Johns said. “At the same time Richards went off for like 13 of his 23 in the third quarter. Then we just kind of settled down and got into our sets and played defense.”
Ian Satler chipped in 12 points for Saltsburg, and Tim Betts scored 14 for Marion Center.
Both teams play Monday. Marion Center (6-4, 4-1) plays at Penns Manor, and Saltsburg (3-7, 1-4) visits Blairsville.
NORTHERN CAMBRIA 61, PENNS MANOR 58: Both teams left points on the court at the free throw line, but Northern Cambria did enough to win at Penns Manor in a Heritage Conference game.
The teams combined to go 23-for-53 from the free throw line. Northern Cambria went only 8-for-23 but outscored the Comets from the field. Penns Manor went 15-for-30 from the line.
Zach Lee scored 19 points to lead nine Northern Cambria players in scoring.
Mitch Hamilton and Gavin Grimaldi combined for 37 of Penns Manor’s points.
Both teams play Tuesday. Northern Cambria plays host to Homer-Center, and Penns Manor (3-8, 1-5) travels to Saltsburg.
HOMER-CENTER 66, PURCHASE LINE 40: Homer-Center jumped out to a big lead on Purchase Line and cruised to a victory in a Heritage Conference road game.
Homer-Center led 20-3 at the end of the first quarter and 38-14 at halftime.
Joe Capitosti scored 23 points to lead 12 Homer-Center players in scoring.
Taylor Antisdel led Purchase Line with 14 points.
Both teams play Tuesday. Homer-Center (11-1, 6-0) visits Northern Cambria, and Purchase Line (3-4, 2-3) plays at Harmony.
GREAT COMMISSION 69, CALVARY BAPTIST 51: Great Commission used a big first half to roll over Calvary Baptist in a non-conference game in Clymer.
Great Commission, out of Altoona, held a 21-8 lead at end the end of the first quarter and extended it to 49-20 by halftime.
Tyler Chambers led Calvary Baptist with 16 points, six rebounds and two assists. Joel Knupp chipped in 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Calvary Baptist (7-2) plays Huntingdon Christian in Calvary Christian of Huntingdon’s tournament this evening.
