Despite having three regulars in the rotation foul out, United’s bench players delivered and the Lions survived Purchase Line’s late push and held on for a 60-51 win in a Heritage Conference boys’ basketball game Saturday.
The Lions carried a 45-32 lead into the fourth quarter, but three post players fouled out in the fourth quarter as the aggressive Red Dragons refused to give up.
“Three guys fouled out and we had to go deep into the bench,” United coach Tyler Stokes said. “They shot 11 free throws in the fourth quarter, and they were on the line a good bit. But our bench players came through, grinded it out and got a win.”
Blake Brendlinger scored 18 points to lead the Lions, and Caleb McAdoo added 11 points and eight blocked shots. Mike Gill pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
For Purchase Line, Eric Faught scored 19 points. The Red Dragons have lost six straight games since a modest two-game winning streak in mid-January.
United (7-10, 5-8 conference) welcomes Ligonier Valley on Monday. Purchase Line (5-10, 3-9) plays host to Blairsville on Tuesday.
