Rep. Sam Smith, R-Punxsutawney, will be this year’s recipient of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania President’s Medal of Distinction.

Robin Gorman, executive assistant and chief of staff to IUP President Dr. Michael Driscoll and the university’s non-voting representative to Indiana Borough council, announced the selection to council members on Tuesday.

The President’s Medal of Distinction is the highest non-degree award presented by IUP.

It was established in 1985 to honor citizens whose contributions are of special significance to the university.

Smith, who is the Speaker of the House, is an IUP trustee.
