Shoppers arriving at the Walmart in White Township this weekend may encounter some people outside the store huddling in cardboard boxes who appear to be homeless.
They’re not. They’re just pretending to be for the weekend.
Members of the western Pennsylvania chapter of Team Red, White and Blue will stay outside the Walmart for 30 consecutive hours, sleeping in cardboard boxes and eating only food provided by the community.
Team RWB is a veterans’ organization whose mission is to enrich the lives of American vets by connecting them to their community through physical and social activity. The Team RWB members will stage the “sleep out” to raise awareness of homelessness and to collect donations for Tomorrow’s Hope, a transitional housing and service center for vets in Coalport, Clearfield County, and for a possible veterans’ transitional center in Indiana.
The Team RWB members will be in front of the Walmart from 9 a.m. Saturday until 3 p.m. Sunday. Shoppers will be encouraged to make a financial donation or drop off a nonperishable food item or an unused male hygiene item that will be donated to Tomorrow’s Hope.
The event is sponsored by VFW Post #1989, Walmart, Women of the Bridge Core and the Indiana County Veterans Affairs Office.
