HIGH SCHOOL BOYS' BASKETBALL: Vikings eliminated from WPIAL playoffs
WEXFORD — There will be no magical playoff run for the Apollo-Ridge boys’ basketball team this season.
The Vikings never quite recovered from a 16-point halftime deficit and they had no answer for Quaker Valley’s Winter Fondi in a 64-47 loss in a WPIAL Class AA first-round playoff game Wednesday night at North Allegheny High School.
Quaker Valley limited Apollo-Ridge’s high-powered offense to 15 points in the first half to take a 31-15 advantage at the break, then kept the Vikings at arm’s length throughout the second half.
Tre Tipton poured in a game-high 22 points for Apollo-Ridge. Dylan Flickinger hit three 3s and added 13 points, but they got little help from their teammates. The Vikings got 12 points from the rest of the team.
Fondi recorded a triple double for Quaker Valley with a team-high 16 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Chris Conlan added 15 points and Christian Miller had 13.
Apollo-Ridge ended the season at 19-4.
The Vikings were attempting to duplicate last year’s inspiring playoff run, during which they reeled off three straight wins to reach the WPIAL semifinals for the second time in school history. The run included upset wins over Sto-Rox and Jeannette. In the quarterfinals, Apollo-Ridge erased an 18-point first-quarter deficit to beat a highly regarded Jeannette team as the Vikings qualified for the PIAA tournament for just the second time since 1991.
