Eluding police

State police at Indiana said Thomas Shaffer Jr., of Marion Center, faces charges of DUI, fleeing and eluding police, reckless endangerment and numerous summary traffic offenses after he was stopped for a traffic violation today on Washington Church Road.

Police said that after Shaffer was pulled over, he shifted his vehicle into reverse and hit the police car before fleeing. An approximate 10-mile pursuit ended when Shaffer lost control of his vehicle and it ran off Redding Run Road and went into a ditch, police said.

He was placed in the Indiana County Jail to await arraignment.


Aggravated assault

Indiana police said Thursday that officers responded at 9:30 p.m. Jan. 10 to a traffic crash at South Seventh and School streets. A passenger in the vehicle was seriously injured and flown by helicopter to a hospital. Police said the driver, Suzanne Grower, 43, of Indiana, was intoxicated.

After the results of a blood test were received, Grower was charged with aggravated assault by vehicle while under the influence, DUI, careless driving and speeding, police said.

She was arraigned and released on a $5,000 bond, police said.

Drug violations

Indiana University of Pennsylvania police stopped a vehicle for code violations at 10:27 p.m. Jan. 31 in the 900 block of Maple Street.

Police said the driver, Zhafiq Holmes, 19, of Philadelphia, was driving under the influence of a controlled substance. A search of his vehicle found a small amount of marijuana, according to reports.

He was charged with DUI, possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia and summary vehicle code violations.

Campus police investigated an odor of marijuana from a Putt Hall room at 9:03 p.m. Nov. 18.

Police charged Andrew Wetzel, 18, of Indiana, an IUP student in the room, was found to be in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

He was charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession with intent to deliver paraphernalia.

Simple assault

IUP police said IUP student Jenae Alliston, 18, of Upper Chichester, struck an IUP parking enforcement officer in the face with her knee as the officer was attempting to put a boot on Alliston’s vehicle.

Police said the officer was taken to Indiana Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Alliston was charged with simple assault, disorderly conduct and harassment.
