Indiana committed six errors, allowed eight walks and surrendered a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to drop its season opener to Oxford (Ala.), 4-3, in a non-conference baseball game Monday at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The Indians will play their first four games at The Ripken Experience. They take on Green County Tech (Ark.) today.
“We were the better team today,” first-year Indiana coach Ryan Davies said. “We had every opportunity in the world to step on them, but we weren’t able to and we essentially gave them the game down the stretch.”
With the bases loaded and the game knotted 3-3, an Oxford player drilled a ground ball to Indiana third baseman Trent Ream, who fielded the ball and threw home in an attempt to turn a double play. Cole Shaffer corralled Ream’s throw and got the forceout at home before firing to first, where Indiana’s Sean Thompson dropped the attempted double-play exchange, allowing a Yellow Jacket to score from third.
“It shouldn’t have come down to that,” Davies said. “We walked eight guys. You’ve got to be able to throw strikes and pitch to contact, especially early in the year. You’ve got to pitch to contact and let the defense do the work, and the strikeouts will come.”
Ryan Creps and losing pitcher Zach Schultz combined to toss a one-hitter. Schultz struck out one and walked six in three innings.
Creps scored a run and drove in two runs.
NORTHERN CAMBRIA 15, UNITED 4: Josh Prasko fired a one-hitter to lead Northern Cambria to a lopsided win over United in a Heritage Conference game in Armagh.

SALTSBURG 12, PENNS MANOR 2: Steve Richards threw a gem and Saltsburg collected 14 hits to cruise past host Penns Manor in a Heritage Conference game at home.
Richards struck out nine and walked three while tossing a three-hitter. Richards also singled twice and drove in two runs.
