Liquor control enforcement officers seize moonshine stills

Officers of the state police Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement in Punxsutawney last week discovered two moonshine distilled liquor stills, one near Rossiter and the other in Cooper Township, Clearfield County.

Sgt. Shawn Fischer, district office commander of the BLCE, said it’s rare for agents operating out of the Punxsutawney office to find a still, let alone two in one week.

Unlike the stills typically portrayed on TV — hidden in the forest of some southern state and operated with a wood fire — the illegal stills found locally were out of sight in sheds and had propane-fired heat sources.

Fischer said agents acted on tips the bureau received and confiscated the equipment and 4-1/2 gallons of moonshine. The operators of the stills will be charged with misdemeanor offenses and identified after the bureau’s administrative citation process is completed, Fischer said.

The Punxsutawney BLCE office serves nine counties, including Indiana County.
