HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Wildcats nip Saltsburg to end five-game skid

SALTSBURG — Alex Arone limited Saltsburg to two runs on five hits as Homer-Center defeated the Trojans, 3-2, in a Heritage Conference baseball game to end a five-game losing streak Wednesday. Arone struck out nine and walked two in a complete-game effort.

Bryan Buzi went 3-for-4 with a double to pace the Wildcats’ offense. Jimmy Bence was 2-for-3 with a double and Kolby Skultety was 2-for-4.

Losing pitcher Steve Richards struck out four in six innings. He didn’t give up any walks.

Homer-Center (2-5, 2-4 conference) visits Ligonier Valley today. Saltsburg (4-7) plays at Blairsville on Tuesday.


LAUREL HIGHLANDS 11, DERRY 0: Derry managed four hits in a lopsided loss to Laurel Highlands in a WPIAL Section 2-AAA game that was shortened to six innings by the mercy rule at Grandview Field.

Derry struck out 11 times while drawing only three walks.

Laurel Highlands plated six runs in the fifth inning, and then four in the sixth to enforce the mercy rule.

Derry (4-4, 3-3) plays host to Indiana today.
