IUP SOFTBALL: Hawks take two more from Edinboro

IUP rallied from 3-0 deficits in both games to sweep a doubleheader from Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division softball action at Podbielski Field on Wednesday.

IUP won the first game, 9-3, and took the second, 11-3 in six innings, sweeping a twinbill from the Fighting Scots for the second time in four days. IUP won at Edinboro, 9-0 and 7-2, on Sunday.

The Crimson Hawks, who lead the PSAC in home runs, showed they know how to get it done with small ball, too.

IUP got seven run-scoring singles in the second game, four of which came in the five-run third inning that erased a 3-0 deficit.

Hannah Mercer and Rachel Francis hit back-to-back RBI singles to open the scoring for IUP, Allison Viguers added a run-scoring infield hit a couple batters later, and Mary Ward capped the inning with a two-run single to make it 5-3.

Viguers and Angela Devereaux each hit an RBI single in the fifth, and Meghan Carney added a run-scoring double as the Crimson Hawks stretched the lead to 8-3. They enforced the mercy rule with three more runs in the sixth.

Mercer, Viguers, Devereaux, Carney and Stefanie McCoy had two hits apiece in IUP’s 13-hit attack. Viguers, Devereaux and Ward had two RBIs apiece.

Amanda Spindler struck out eight in 5 1-3 innings to earn the win and improve to 8-2. She gave up five hits, five walks and three earned runs.

In the opener, Ward hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third to tie it at 3. IUP scored three runs in the inning on three extra-base hits, all of them with two outs. McCoy hit a triple, Viguers drove her in with a double, and Ward followed with her homer.

Then, in the fourth, IUP scored sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs, highlighted by Viguers’ three-run homer to cap the inning.

Viguers finished 2-for-2 with two walks and four RBIs, McCoy went 2-for-3, and Francis had an RBI.

Alexa Campbell (7-6) earned the win, giving up four hits and three earned runs in five innings. She struck out four and walked three.

Playing four doubleheaders in as many days, IUP (18-10, 11-5 PSAC West) welcomes Gannon today.
