SPRING CHURCH — Armstrong County Coroner Brian Myers said four people died in what he called a “horrific” head-on collision in South Bend Township on Wednesday night.
Authorities said the two-vehicle crash was reported shortly before 10:30 p.m. on Route 156 near Gobblers Run Road.
According to The Associated Press, Myers said a Ford Mustang and a Chevy Lumina collided. Myers said the driver of the Mustang and two passengers were killed. The driver of the Lumina also died, and three passengers were flown to UPMC Presbyterian hospital, where they were in critical condition, Myers said.
WPXI-TV said Myers told them that speed may have been a factor in the crash.
A section of Route 156 was closed through the night. It remained closed this morning as state police accident reconstructionists investigated.
Police hadn’t released any information about the accident as of press time.
In an email this morning, Myers said his office was still notifying families of the deceased. He said he plans to release more information later today.
Elderton fire Chief Mark Spence declined to comment, saying he couldn’t offer any details. He confirmed two vehicles were involved. In addition to his department, firefighters from Kiski Township were summoned.
