HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Big inning sends Valley past Indiana

Host Valley broke open a tied game and mounted a big rally in the fourth inning to beat Indiana, 15-5, in a WPIAL non-section softball game that was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule Monday.

With the game tied 5-5, the Vikings scored 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth to enforce the mercy rule.

Holli Sottile doubled twice to lead Indiana. Adrian Smith smacked two singles.

Indiana’s Brooke Ruffner struck out four, walked seven and allowed eight hits in a complete-game effort.

Indiana (1-6) visits Hampton today.


LIGONIER VALLEY 10, PENNS MANOR 0: Visiting Ligonier Valley jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and never let up en route to a lopsided win over Penns Manor in a Heritage Conference game.

Courtney Frappier doubled and drove in four runs to pace the Rams. Abby Salancy, Caitlin Michaels and Kari Kuhn each singled twice.

Kailee Lear tossed a five-hitter to get the win. Lear struck out five and walked one.

Penns Manor’s Micayla Parfitt allowed nine hits in a complete-game effort.

Ligonier Valley (6-3, 5-2 conference) travels to United on Wednesday. Penns Manor heads to Blairsville today.


DEER LAKES 4, WEST SHAMOKIN 1: Deer Lakes plated three runs in the top of the sixth inning to topple West Shamokin in a WPIAL Section 3-AA game.

West Shamokin’s Brianna Faber tossed a five-hitter.

West Shamokin (2-6) plays host to Freeport today.
