Host Saltsburg plated four runs in the fifth inning and then escaped a bases-loaded jam in the seventh to upset first-place Northern Cambria, 5-4, in a Heritage Conference baseball game Friday.

The Trojans trailed 3-2 with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning when Lucas Mowery clubbed a three-run homer off Colts ace Josh Prasko to give the Trojans their first lead of the day, 5-3.

Down 5-4, the Colts then loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh, a scenario that prompted Saltsburg’s coaching staff to replace starting pitcher Ian Satler with reliever Steve Richards.

Richards came through for the Trojans and induced a 1-2-3 double play to end the game.

“Those guys are all seniors, and they made that play happen,” Saltsburg assistant coach Glenn Richards said of Steve Richards, catcher Lucas Mowery and first baseman Satler. “John Hornick is a nice lefty, and he hit the ball hard. He just hit it right at Steve.”

Satler, who threw 125 pitches in 6 1-3 innings, struck out nine, walked seven and allowed six hits to pick up the win. He also finished 2-for-4.

Richards allowed one hit in 2-3 innings to get the save.

Joe Olish singled and doubled to pace the Colts.

Saltsburg (7-7) plays host to Ligonier Valley on Thursday. Northern Cambria (10-4, 9-2 conference) travels to Central on Monday.

HOMER-CENTER 10, UNITED 1: Homer-Center piled up nine hits and scored the game’s first six runs to ease by host United in a Heritage Conference game.

Andrew Gaydosh went 3-for-5 with a double, a triple and four RBIs to lead Homer-Center. Jim Bence doubled and drove in two runs, and Bryan Buzi singled and drove in two runs.

Stephen Novak fired a five-hitter to earn the win. Novak struck out eight and walked one.

Weylon McGeary stroked two singles to power United.

Losing pitcher Beau Sheriff struck out three and walked four in three innings.

Both teams play at home Monday. Homer-Center welcomes Blairsville, and United (2-10) plays host to Conemaugh Valley.
