PLUMCREEK TOWNSHIP — An Indiana University of Pennsylvania student was killed in a head-on crash Saturday morning on Route 422 near Elderton
Tyler Kulp, of Laureldale, Berks County, died at the scene of the crash, state police reported.
An eastbound car driven by Stephen Caulfield, of Waterford, Westmoreland County, crossed the centerline of the highway at 9:31 a.m. and hit a westbound station wagon driven by Kulp, according to troopers at Kittanning.
The vehicles collided just more than one-half mile east Route 210.
Caulfield was not injured, police said.
Kulp was a music major at IUP, according to the university website.
Armstrong County Coroner Brian Myers reported an autopsy was to be performed Saturday afternoon.
The crash remains under investigation by state police.
Troopers closed the highway for about six hours while they investigated the accident. The Elderton and Kittanning Township fire departments assisted police at the scene; Citizens’ Ambulance Service paramedics and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation also responded.
The Indiana fire department was dispatched to the area to assist with traffic control in the Shelocta area.
