A wayward raccoon is to blame for a power outage that affected Penelec and REA customers in and around Indiana Borough and White Township early Wednesday morning.
According to a Penelec spokesman, the raccoon got into the Edgewood substation off Route 286 and knocked it offline sometime around 1:15 a.m., leaving roughly 900 customers without power.
Penelec also provides power to REA Energy Cooperative, whose customers also were affected.
As a work-around, crews temporarily routed power around the substation, restoring some service around 3:30 a.m. However, there were capacity issues with the work-around, and some customers experienced brownouts and flickering lights.
Penelec had full service restored by around 10:45 a.m., the spokesman said.
The raccoon was killed in the accident, he added.
