Young Township’s Jarrett Geiger scored from first base on an error in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Renegades to a 4-3 win over Indiana Legion in an Indiana County Senior Legion baseball game Tuesday at Bertolino Field.
The Ponies’ Matt Griffith stroked an RBI single to score Bo Putt and tie the game, 3-3, in the top of the seventh.
Geiger cracked a one-out base hit in the bottom of the seventh off Putt, who was pitching in relief. The following batter, Lucas Mowery, laid down a bunt that an Indiana Legion player fired errantly into the right-field corner, allowing Geiger to score from first to end the game.
“The plan was to move Jarrett to second, and with our two, three and four batters coming up, we figured one of them would come up with the game-winning hit,” Young Township coach Barry Thomas said. “Mowery laid down a nice bunt, and they fielded it cleanly. He just ended up throwing it down the line.”
Austin Laird struck out one, walked none and allowed two hits in one inning of relief to earn the win. Starting pitcher Ian Satler struck out seven and walked three in six innings.
Jordan Hudzicki went 2-for-4 to lead Indiana Legion.
Putt struck out two and walked four in four innings of relief. He also scored three runs.
Both teams play Saturday. Indiana Legion plays host to Homer City Legion, and Young Township (3-3) welcomes Marion Center.
KOVACIK INSURANCE 13, HOMER CITY LEGION 3: Kovacik Insurance jumped out to a 6-0 first-inning lead, surrendered just two hits and improved to 6-1 by routing Homer City Legion at WyoTech Park in a game that was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.
“We strung together hits and took advantage of a few errors and walks to get off to a quick start,” Kovacik Insurance assistant coach Todd Faulk said. “After that, Colton McMillan really gave us a strong pitching effort. Aside from three runs in the fifth, he held them scoreless.”
Anthony Faulk went 3-for-5 with a double and three runs scored for Kovacik Insurance. John Distefano singled and drove in three runs, and Lucas Palmer singled and drove in two runs.
McMillan struck out eight, walked two and allowed only two hits.
Both teams play Saturday. Kovacik Insurance travels to Punxsutawney for a doubleheader, and Homer City Legion visits Indiana Legion.
