The Indiana County commissioners Wednesday approved eight more requests for aid from the county’s supplemental liquid fuels fund to help municipalities make road repairs.
The commissioners earlier this year began distributing more than $1 million in liquid fuels dollars to the county’s 38 municipalities, based on a formula weighted 50 percent on a municipality’s population and 50 percent on its road miles. So far, 29 municipalities have requested and received county liquid fuels funds to leverage road improvements.
Wednesday’s approvals included:
• $3,427 for Glen Campbell to offset the cost of sealing various streets
• $2,796 for Plumville to help pay for sweeping all borough streets
• $23,614 for East Mahoning Township to help pay for sealing Pollock Road from Johnston Road to Route 210
• $48,467 for Armstrong Township to help pay for drainage improvements and widening of Cheese Run Road
• $52,632 for Center Township to offset the cost of the Yankeetown paving project
• $48,198 for Cherryhill Township to help pay for new road name signs and emulsion
• $19,964 for Grant Township to help pay for road repairs, oil and chipping material
• $25,549 for Pine Township to offset the cost of its road resurfacing project
The commissioners also approved a conditional contract award to D&D Woods Sales Inc., of Nicktown, for the sale and cutting of timber on the Indiana County/Jimmy Stewart Airport property.
D&D bid $49,000 for an estimated 118,575 board feet of saw timber and $4 per ton for an estimated 1,200 tons of pulp wood.
The trees were identified by the Pennsylvania Bureau of Aviation as obstructions and must be removed for a precision landing approach to the airport.
The commissioners approved entering a contract agreement with the state Department of Community and Economic Development for a $500,000 grant through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The grant will help permanently disabled residents with housing accessibility modification assistance to keep them in their homes in place of institutionalization.
In other action the commissioners:
• Announced that Maureen Pounds has agreed to serve as the interim director of the county’s Department of Human Services, succeeding Bonni Dunlap who retired last month. Pounds was the assistant director and has worked in the department 19 years.
• Appointed Rob Barto, Michael Keith and Jim Struzzi to the Route 119 Improvement Committee. The committee members from Indiana County and those from Jefferson and Clearfield counties advocate for operational and safety improvements along the Route 119 corridor between Blairsville and DuBois.
• Approved a cooperation agreement naming the Indiana County Community Action Program as the county’s service provider for the Emergency Solutions Grant program. ICAPP’s 19 food pantries serve about 5,000 county residents monthly, and last year gave 750,000 pounds of food to hungry county residents.
