HARRISBURG (AP) — A sixth-term state senator from northwestern Pennsylvania said he won’t seek re-election next year, becoming the fourth Republican to announce plans to leave the chamber.

Sen. Robert Robbins of Mercer County said in a statement Monday that it was an honor and a pleasure to represent his area in the Legislature, and the decision to retire was a difficult one.

His term ends Nov. 30, 2014.

The 69-year-old Robbins is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and a decorated combat veteran of two tours of duty in Vietnam.

He served in the state House of Representatives from 1983 to 1990 before being elected to the Senate. He occupies the 50th District seat, which includes Crawford and Mercer counties and parts of Butler and Lawrence counties.
