Five area wrestlers posted top-five finishes in their respective weight classes at the Southmoreland Holiday Classic on Saturday.
Andrew Deitman and Tyler Oliver placed third for United, while Seth McLendon added a fifth-place finish for the Lions. Meanwhile, Dereck Croyle added a fourth-place finish to lead Ligonier Valley.
For United, Deitman went 5-1 in the 285-pound weight class, winning four of his matches by fall. Oliver went 4-1 at 195 pounds, winning three matches by fall. McLendon went 4-2 at 220 pounds with three wins by fall.
Ligonier Valley’s Croyle went 6-2 to take fourth place at 160 pounds, and two other Ligonier Valley wrestlers earned top-eight finishes.
Dalton Clark went 4-3 and took sixth place in the 132-pound weight class, and Nathan Trottier went 4-2 to finish seventh at 170 pounds.
Both of Croyle’s losses came against Meyersdale’s Christian Hutzell, who beat him in a second-round match to relegate Croyle to the consolation bracket and again in the third-place match. Croyle posted five wins by fall.
Clark and Trottier won two matches by fall, and each scored two victories by decision.
