Dems settle races in Pittsburgh, Philly

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Democrats on Tuesday nominated veteran city Councilman William Peduto for Pittsburgh mayor and gave longtime Philadelphia city Controller Alan Butkovitz the nod for a third term in two of the most hotly contested races in Pennsylvania's primary.

In Scranton's mayoral race, Democrats tapped city Tax Collector Bill Courtright as their standard-bearer and Republicans picked financial consultant Garett Lewis as their nominee in the Nov. 5 general election.

Still too close to call were nomination battles for mayor in Harrisburg and York and a contested statewide judicial primary.

In one of two special elections to fill open seats in the state House of Representatives, voters in District 42 in Allegheny County, voters elected attorney Daniel Miller of Pittsburgh in a three-way race
