Gates foundation grant in jeopardy
PITTSBURGH (AP) — A $40 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to improve Pittsburgh Public Schools may be in jeopardy because the district and its teachers’ union can’t agree on tests to measure teacher performance.
Gates Foundation spokeswoman Vicki Phillips said in a Thursday statement that they’ve been frustrated about the impasse between the district and the union, but no decisions have been made about the grant.
Phillips said the foundation is hopeful that the two sides can reach a resolution.
The Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers said it has agreed to an evaluation system.
The union says it is concerned teachers might lose their jobs over the process.
The National American Federation of Teachers has called defeating the new Pittsburgh performance standards a “crucial fight.”
