NYC space auction includes lunar dust
NEW YORK (AP) — Space history buffs will have a chance to bid on artifacts from spacesuits to a lunar dust-covered shoulder strap from the Apollo 12 mission.
The sale is Tuesday at Bonhams in New York City.
It includes a motion picture sight ring from Apollo 15. The small polarizing camera filter was used by astronaut James Irwin on Apollo 15. It is being sold by Irwin’s estate and is estimated at $20,000 to $30,000. The auction house said it’s probably the only one in private hands.
Another fascinating item is an Apollo 12 shoulder strap embedded with lunar dust. It was used when astronauts Charles Conrad and Alan Bean conducted two extensive surface explorations.
It has a pre-sale estimate of $25,000 to $35,000.
