Reid heads to rules showdown

on July 15, 2013 10:20 AM

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid is driving toward new rules that would help President Barack Obama win confirmation for some of his nominees.

But the move might strip future senators of their prized ability to delay action.

Reid plans to keep pushing to let nominees win approval with a simple majority, instead of the 60-vote threshold that has stalled many nominations.

All 100 senators are invited to a closed-to-the-public meeting this evening to seek a compromise.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said Reid’s move would “change the core of the Senate.”
