Along with co-host Purchase Line High School, United High School hosted 186 students at this choral event.

Mrs. Acey Gongaware, United’s choral director, coordinated the event along with Mrs. Paula Saylor, Purchase Line’s director.

Mr. Scott Salser conducted, and Mrs. Jacquelyn Kuehn accompanied the chorus.

The United students who attended the festival were Emily Akers, Jacob Brown, Joseph Means, Anna Gazdik, Austin Friday, Jayda Fyock and Astrid Muir.

Of those seven students, Brown, Friday and Fyock will be attending the Region Chorus Festival at Corry Area School District in late February.

When asked how his district experience went, Means characterized it as “eye-opening.”

There were so many people here who were musically inclined, and there were a lot of talented musicians as well. I do plan on trying to go again next year,” Means said.

This year’s chorus festival was not the first that United has hosted. District Chorus was also held at United in 2007 and 2011.

According to Gongaware, “We have a reputation for a wonderful festival here at United. United pride was on full display for those couple of days, and the 29 directors and 186 students who were visiting with us were impressed!”

Gongaware also noted that “hosting an event like this is like planning a wedding — you start working on it about one year out. If it weren’t for the amazing music students here at United and the help of alum Mr. John Sokol, I don’t know that we could have pulled it off.”
