Prison Superintendent Eric Bush reported Arthur Charles Martin, 30, was found unconscious in his cell at approximately 2:45 p.m. Thursday during a routine security check of the unit where he was housed.
Staff workers immediately responded to Martin’s cell and provided life-saving measures until facility medical personnel arrived, according to a news release from the prison office.
First responders continued care for Martin, and Indiana County Coroner Jerry Overman Jr. pronounced him dead in the prison at 4:21 p.m.
Martin had been housed at SCI Pine Grove since March, officials said.
He entered the state prison system in September 2014 to serve a term of three years and four months to 10 years for a conviction for manufacture or possession with intent to deliver drugs.
He was convicted in Jefferson County Court.
Bush said the investigation has been turned over to the state police, according to state prison policy. He said the coroner’s office has not yet determined the cause of Martin’s death.
