WESTOVER — Baseball and softball practices have started, and the teams will be playing games soon!

The players are excited and ready to start their seasons!

The varsity softball coaches are John Cessna and Melissa Mastrine.

The varsity baseball coaches are Ralph Butterworth and Jason Romagna, with the help of Roger Young, a volunteer assistant coach, and Dustin Kurtz, the junior high student coach.

Jason Romagna said, “Hopefully the weather will break and we can get most of our games in. Look forward to a great season!”

Some of the games have already been canceled due to weather, but the first junior high baseball game was Thursday and the varsity baseball team plays today at Mo Valley.

The first varsity softball game was Tuesday and the junior high had a game on Thursday.

The elementary students got some exciting news this week. The PSEA (Pennsylvania State Education Association) has teamed up with the Altoona Curve baseball club and teachers to help their students.

The program, called “Steamer’s Student All-Stars,” gave each teacher in grades one through six six pairs of Curve tickets. Each teacher passed them out to deserving students.

The particular students will have a chance to be honored in an on-field ceremony.

Students were rewarded with tickets for continued excellence in any subject, improvement in one or more letter grades, or by displaying exceptional leadership skills in the classroom. Parents also have the chance to order additional grandstand tickets at only $5.

The students will be honored at Curve games on April 26-28.

Don’t forget! The drama department will be performing the musical “Seussical” at 7 p.m. April 12 and 13 and at 2 p.m. April 14. Tickets will be sold at the door for $5 for general admission.
