A Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning student at Indiana County Technology Center has earned state SkillsUSA placement, the first of its kind for the program, now in only its fourth year at the school.

Marion Center junior Anthony Potts placed third under the guidance of ICTC HVAC instructor Jim Gould.

The event, one of many in the state competition held in Mount Joy, required 10 HVAC student competitors to answer a written assessment and put together five duct fittings within five hours.

“I’m very happy about winning, especially since this was a first-time achievement for me,” Potts said.

Student competitors were evaluated by sheet-metal union workers, who graded each student’s work on appearance, fit, and air flow.

Potts practiced for the event for more than a month by working on sheet metal and reviewing for the written test.

“I couldn’t be more proud of him. He has a great work ethic,” said Gould.

“The first three places were very close, and really any of the students could have taken first.”
