MARION CENTER: FFA members excel

MARION CENTER — On Tuesday, five of Marion Center High School’s Future Farmers of America members participated in the Indiana County FFA Public Speaking Contest. The contest started at 3:45 p.m. at Penns Manor High School.

There were many topic areas and events students could participate in. Michael Ann Chichy, Alyshia Talmage and Kara Zolocsik, all seniors, participated in the job interview.

This event involved producing a r←sum← and cover letter, filling out a job application, and then participating in the mock interview.

Lindsey Weaver, a sophomore, participated in extemporaneous speaking. In this event, students brought textbooks and other print resources which they could use in composing a three-to-five minute speech on a given prompt.

Matthew Ferringer, also a sophomore, participated in the junior prepared public speaking.

In this contest, each student prepared and presented a five-minute speech on a topic of his or her choice. Other events included creed, senior prepared public speaking, conservation public speaking and mechanics.

Kara Zolocsik took first place in the job interview, followed by Michael Ann Chichy in second and Alyshia Talmage in fifth; Lindsey Weaver took second place in extemporaneous speaking; and Matthew Ferringer earned third-place in junior prepared public speaking.

Zolocsik, Chichy, Weaver and Ferringer will be moving on to the Western Pennsylvania Regional FFA Public Speaking Contest, which will be held in Cranberry on April 23.

In other FFA news, members are currently conducting a Ninth Street Deli fundraiser, selling tickets that can be used to buy hoagies. Later this month, the club will also be selling Java Joe Coffee Products.
