MARION CENTER — The pool at Marion Center Area High School has been quite busy recently. A variety of classes and activities, including basic swimming, water mania, lifeguarding and after-school swims, are offered and taught by Catherine Blystone and Lori Lezanic.

Lifeguard Training is the first period of the day and is currently being taken by the second wave of students this year. They are learning back boarding procedures and CPR with AEDs right now as they work towards earning their American Red Cross certification.

The seventh- and eighth-grade swimming classes have just finished their snorkeling units, learning about types of entries, snorkel-popping, blast techniques, surface dives, methods of communication and safety procedures, and they even participated in treasure hunts.

Now, the seventh-grade swimming class is starting their water polo unit while the eighth-grade class is beginning their survival swimming unit. The survival swimming unit covers swimming with clothes on, methods of inflation and other survival swimming skills.

With the springlike weather here now, there is also a new season in after-school pool activities. Evening swimming lessons, offered from 6-8 p.m. for ages one through 14, have just concluded.

A special thanks is given to the water safety instructors Katrina Lemmon, Jon Mabon, Courtney McMahan and Heather Shick. Also assisting were Jacob Bothell, Todd Fetsko and Chantel Glasser.

Starting up in place of evening swimming lessons is the after-school “Swim & Snack.” It is offered to students in grades four through eight every Wednesday from 3 to 5:30 p.m. The cost is $3 and includes more than two hours of open swim and a snack. Students wishing to participate may receive a ride home from their parents or ride the activity bus.
