SALTSBURG — Saltsburg Middle/High School kicked off the 2013-14 year academic with some exciting events and changes.

A welcome is extended to the newest faculty members: Jessica Forman, mathematics long-term substitute; Jennifer Little, middle school science teacher and elementary reading/math teacher; and Karen Magalich long term social studies substitute. Welcomed back is Glenn Richards, reading teacher, returning from Blairsville. Saltsburg also welcomes student teachers from Indiana University of Pennsylvania: Amelia Crocker, biology, and Kelsey Ferguson, physical education.

Along with the new members of the building we welcome the return of the iPads. The students of grades nine through 12 received their iPads this grading quarter.

As a new initiative, grades six through eight received brand-new Google Chrome Books. Chrome Books are a low-cost but effective substitute for a traditional laptop. Students are also being trained in cloud-based storage methods.

Some exciting events to start off this new school year included the new change of Saltsburg’s school schedule with half-day Fridays.

Students are released from school at 12:10 p.m. every Friday, allowing administration, faculty and staff time to participate in professional development activities. This time allows for training and collaboration toward the advancement of individualized instruction and intervention through data analysis and planning.

All of the professional learning activities have a great impact on the quality of instruction students receive and will improve the climate and culture in which they receive this education.

This year underclassmen kicked off the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, which was a great success. Middle school students participated in team-building activities and had a blast while learning how to keep our school bully-free.

Saltsburg homecoming took place on Sept. 13 with a parade led by the marching band.

The homecoming court this year included: Ashton Battistelli, escorted by Dominic Feiling; Briana Carr, escorted by Ben Shirley; Kaylee McGregor, escorted by Jesse Veronie; Emilie Okopal, escorted by Mark Shondelmyer; and Rayannon Willett, escorted by Ian Satler. Kaylee McGregor was crowned our homecoming queen by the 2012 homecoming queen, Bayli Zimmerman.

On Saturday, the varsity cheerleaders sponsored the 2013 homecoming dance, with the theme “Shine Bright Like a Diamond.” Homecoming was a great success.

Yearbook members started their fundraising with a hoagie/pizza sale from PostAvenue Fundraising. Orders are due Oct. 21, and the delivery date is Oct. 31. Cost of a hoagie is $6. Checks can be made payable to SMHS. Yearbooks can be purchased at a discounted price of $55 until Nov. 3. All students had their school pictures taken for the yearbook. If pictures were not ordered on picture day, they can be purchased online at www.inter-state. com. Make-up picture day is scheduled for Oct. 23.

The junior class is holding a Pampered Chef fundraiser through Oct. 20. If you would like to place an order, please see a junior or contact the high school office.

Along with school events, Saltsburg’s band has also hit it off with a good start. They attended the Indiana County Fair’s Band Night, Indiana County Band Fest at Indiana Area Senior High School and the IUP homecoming parade.

This year’s marching band theme is Michael Jackson, performing his songs, “Bad,” “I Want You Back” and “Thriller.” This year the band, under the direction of Mary Jo Fadden, is led by senior drum majors Missy Bruce and Olivia Humphrey and features sousaphone players senior Bobby Muir and seventh-grader Rosa Fricke-Roman.

Also, the PSATs are right around the corner, on Wednesday. It is free to all sophomores.

The Remembering Adam drive is under way. Any student in grades six through 12 can sign up by pledging to live a drug-free life. Melissa Milanak and Darrin Baker are the club sponsors.

With the school year continuing on its way, more exciting events are to come.
