Donald Glenn Frederick, 88, of Blairsville, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2019, at home with family.
He was born Nov. 11, 1930, in Coral to John B. Frederick and Beulah Alma (Milliken) Frederick.
On Aug. 21, 1950, Don married the love of his life, Ada Wyona (Hull).
Don attended Coral Lutheran Chapel and later in life United Presbyterian Church in Blairsville. He was an avid reader of the Bible. Don attended grade school in Graceton but left school to work at Cresson Nurseries, Arone Concrete, and then worked 32 years at Bethlehem Steel Mills in Johnstown. His love of shrubs and trees fostered a desire to start his own nursery, Evergreen Gardens Nursery, which began as a hobby while employed at Bethlehem Steel, and later, with the support and hard work of his wife, blossomed into a thriving business when Don retired from the mills.
Don became an expert horticulturist and landscaper from practical experience and home-study courses from Penn State University. In 1989 Donald developed a particular variety of an evergreen juniper shrub and obtained a patent on the shrub in 1994. The shrub was named Loree Dawn Juniper, after his only daughter. Another patent he obtained was for a flowering shrub, named Frederick’s Gold Barberry. After closing the nursery business, Don enjoyed working at home maintaining the many shrubs and trees that adorned the landscape.
Donald is survived by his wife Ada, Blairsville; son Gregory and daughter-in-law Susan, Blairsville; son Daniel, Blairsville; daughter Loree Karan and son-in-law Robert Karan, Greensburg; and two grandsons, Douglas Karan and Joshua Karan, Greensburg.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Alfred, Richard, Edward and Jane.
In accordance with his wishes, a private service was held for only the family.
