Ruth M. (Thompson) Elkin, 92, of Marion Center, died Wednesday, May 15, 2019, in Indiana.
She was born in 1927 in Marion Center to Benton R. and Sara Jane Swan Thompson.
Ruth was a member of Washington Presbyterian Church and a former member of the Palos Park Presbyterian Church, Palos Park, Ill., where she served as a deacon and elder.
As her family grew up in Palos Park, she served as room mother, Little League volunteer and organized the volunteer program at the new Palos Park Hospital.
Mrs. Elkin was an avid reader of both fiction and non-fiction and enjoyed playing the organ and piano. She rarely missed sending a card for special occasions to all of those she met throughout her life.
She is survived by three daughters and four sons: Elizabeth Jane Elkin, Philadelphia; Arthur Lawrence Elkin and wife Mary Lynn, Lee’s Summit, Mo.; Susan Reynolds Hodgson and husband Steven, Belleville, Ill.; Jan Christopher Elkin, Marion Center; Marianna Ruth Bapple and husband Joseph, Sun Lakes, Ariz.; Scott Gregory Elkin, Laporte, Ind.; and Jonn Douglas Elkin, Union Mills, Ind.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother and one sister, Richard C. Thompson and wife Mary Lou, Home, and Ann Heeter, Butler; one brother-in law, Donald Elkin and wife Dorothy, Stephenson, Va.; and many special nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arthur L. Elkin; a brother-in-law, Darl Elkin and wife Anna Belle; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Arthur R. and Ruby E. Elkin; and her brother-in-law, Paul Heeter.
A memorial service will be held at Washington Presbyterian Church, Home, Saturday at 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a favorite charity in Ruth’s memory.
