KITTANNING — An Indiana University of Pennsylvania student who served as an aide to state Sen.-elect Joe Pittman, R-Indiana, was killed Friday when his car plunged over an embankment at the intersection of state Route 268 (East Brady Road) and Butler Road in East Franklin Township, Armstrong County.
The Armstrong County Coroner’s office said Brian Henry Swatt, 21, of Mayfield, Lackawanna County, failed to stop at a stop sign at the end of Butler Road. His 2014 Nissan Altima traveled across East Brady Road, and then went approximately 150 yards down over an embankment, coming to rest on its roof, according to the report.
The car was not found for 24 hours and a missing person report had been issued for Swatt, a rising senior majoring in political science at IUP.
“Brian Swatt was not only an outstanding member of my team, but also a close friend,” Pittman said Saturday night. “He worked side-by-side with me throughout my campaign and began working for my Senate district office just four days ago.”
Swatt had been president of the Student Government Association and served until recently as an appointee of Gov. Tom Wolf to the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Board of Governors.
