Penns Manor starter Kassidy Smith narrowly overcame Northern Cambria’s Jessica Krug in a pitchers’ duel, and Larkyn Crowe belted a bases-loaded, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Comets over the visiting Colts, 4-3, in a Heritage Conference softball game Tuesday.

Northern Cambria appeared poised for a comeback victory, taking its lone lead of the game, 3-2, in the top of the seventh inning on Camryn Dumm’s two-out, two-RBI double.

But after Krug struck out the leadoff batter in the bottom half, Abby Tomayko reached base on an error, Smith advanced Tomayko to third with a single and Anna Peterman drew an intentional walk to load the bases. Crowe stepped to the plate fifth for the Comets, plating Tomayko and Smith with a line drive shot to center field with her lone hit to end the game.

Penns Manor struck first with a run in the first inning, and after Northern Cambria knotted the score with a run in the third, the Comets regained the slim lead, 2-1, with a run in the fifth.

Crowe paced the Comets with three RBIs and Smith went 3-for-4 at the plate.

For Northern Cambria, Brooke Lieb and Johnnie Marie Olenchick each doubled, and Nicole Bearer had a pair of hits.

Smith struck out 14 and issued one walk in the complete-game victory.

Krug took was charged with four runs — two earned — and struck out four in the loss.

Both teams play on Thursday. Penns Manor (9-5, 8-5 conference) visits Marion Center, and Northern Cambria welcomes West Shamokin.

MARION CENTER 14, PURCHASE LINE 4: Kass Roush limited Purchase Line to just three hits in a complete-game effort, and Marion Center won a Heritage Conference game that was shortened to five innings on the road.

Purchase Line took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the opening inning, but Marion Center responded with six in the top of the second to build a 7-3 advantage.

Morgan Straw had a pair of hits, including her second home run in as many days, and Mia Urbani went 3-for-3 with a double.

For Purchase Line, Carly Ward hit a triple.

Marion Center (14-1, 9-1) plays host to Penns Manor on Thursday. Purchase Line travels to Harmony for a non-conference game today.

BASEBALL

PENNS MANOR 5, NORTHERN CAMBRIA 3: Penns Manor utilized its patience at the plate, scoring four runs in the third inning to take the lead despite generating just one base hit in the frame, and the Comets held on to beat visiting Northern Cambria in a Heritage Conference baseball game.

Northern Cambria took a 2-1 lead before the ill-fated bottom half of the third.

Penns Manor reached on an error to lead off and walked twice to load the bases. Following a strikeout, the Comets drew another walk to drive in the tying run, and after a fly out, consecutive run-scoring walks and an RBI double gave Penns Manor a three-run, 5-2 lead.

Comets starter Garrett Grimaldi and Kody Templeton combined to all but shut down the Colts the rest of the way. Grimaldi struck out five and was charged with three runs — two earned — over 5 2-3 innings to earn the win, and Templeton fired 1 1-3 innings of shutout relief.

Tommy Hamilton had a double for Penns Manor, and Brandon Dunmire singled twice.

For Northern Cambria, Mike Hoover went 3-for-3, and Ben Vasil and Mark Marino had a pair of hits apiece.

Both teams play Thursday. Penns Manor travels to Marion Center, and Northern Cambria (7-5, 6-5) welcomes West Shamokin.

MARION CENTER 17, PURCHASE LINE 5: Clayton Coble went 3-for-4 with a triple and a game-high four RBIs, helping to power Marion Center past host Purchase Line in a Heritage Conference game that was shortened to five innings.

Marion Center scored at least one run in every inning and never trailed.

Gaven Palko went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for the Stingers. Marcus Badzik singled, doubled and drove in three runs, Brandon Gaston had two hits and three RBIs, Landin Bennet drove in a pair of runs and Skyler Olp had two hits.

For Purchase Line, Isaac Huey had a pair of singles.

Palko started to earn the win, and Aidan Cattau struck out seven in 3 2-3 innings of relief.

Marion Center (6-6, 5-5) welcomes Penns Manor on Thursday. Purchase Line travels to Harmony for a non-conference game today.
