IUP plays Concord (W.Va.) at 6 p.m. today in the third of four games in the IRMC/Hilton Garden Inn Classic at the KCAC.
Concord beat Pitt Johnstown in Friday’s second game, 79-76. The Mountain Lions led by as many as 11 points in the first half, held a three-point edge at halftime and made plays down the stretch in a second half that was tight throughout.
Concord’s Ethan Heller scored a game-high 29 points on 11-for-16 shooting, including 5-for-10 from 3-point range. The Mountain Lions made 14 3s on 34 attempts compared to Pitt Johnstown’s 4-for-18.
The rest of Concord’s team shot 15-for-51 (28 percent) and the Mountain Lions finished at 38.8 percent overall. Martin Kelly Jr. scored 15 points, and Malik Johnson had 14.
“They just barely missed the NCAA Tournament last year and they lost in the finals of the Mountain East Conference,” IUP coach Joe Lombardi said. “They did lose a player that go 28 against us last year and their second-leading scorer, but they have some guys back that can play, and we’re expecting a strong effort from them.”
The IUP women open the basketball action today, taking on Davis & Elkins (W.Va.) at 3 p.m. at Memorial Field House.
