The Marion Center Stingers can hurt opponents in a lot of ways. On Friday, it was Austin Rinehart’s turn to deliver the blows.

Rinehart rushed for 147 yards on 14 carries and scored three touchdowns in a 29-20 victory over Penns Manor in a game that was crucial to both teams’ playoff hopes. In a game that was close throughout, Marion Center had the answers for the Comets. With the Stingers nursing a 15-14 lead, Rinehart picked up some blocks from his offensive line and broke loose on a 73-yard scoring run that came 17 seconds after Penns Manor had scored to pull within a point. Rinehart earlier scored on 1- and 14-yard runs. Marion Center sits a 4-4 going into another crucial game, at home against United on Friday.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK! (Week 5)

Marion Center found a workhorse, and when it came time to finish off an upset over the previously unbeaten Northern Cambria Colts, the Stingers kept feeding. Garet Wells, one of the Stingers’ trio of running backs, carried 34 times for 170 yards in a 28-12 victory. Wells scored two touchdowns, on runs of 3 and 30 yards, with both coming in the second half when Marion Center was holding Northern Cambria at bay. His 30-yard jaunt finished off the Colts.

Wells also made his mark on defense, intercepting one of the three passes the Stingers picked off on the night. It was easily Wells’ biggest game of the season and Marion Center’s best on offense behind an improving offensive line that consists of seniors Aaron Brewer, Travis Parsell, Levi Isenberg and Devin Lingenfelter and junior Clayton Coble. The Stingers outgained Northern Cambria, 345-253, posting season highs in yardage and points.

Gaven Palko. Marion Center. #4 Quarterback. 5 -foot-10, 160 pounds.

The Marion Center Stingers posted their first win of the season, and they did it through the air behind quarterback Gaven Palko. Palko threw touchdowns passes to three different receivers, and the Stingers beat Purchase Line, 20-8. A sophomore, Palko hit Aaron Brewer with a 19-yard pass to open the scoring, connected with Brant Lydic on a catch-and-run that covered 48 yards for the go-ahead score late in the third quarter and then found Zach Hicks on a 5-yard play on fourth down to put the game away late in the fourth quarter. Palko finished 8-for-13 for 142 yards and made up for two interceptions with the touchdown strikes.
