Rich Hill kept the St. Louis Cardinals off balance in his longest start of the season and the Pittsburgh Pirates completed a three-game sweep with a 2-1 victory. The 43-year-old Hill allowed just four hits in 6 2/3 innings, walking three and striking out six. Ji Hwan Bae's two-run single in the first was all the offense Pittsburgh needed as the Pirates extended their winning streak to five. Andrew Knizner hit his seventh home run of the season for St. Louis. The Cardinals have dropped five of six.

Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Oneil Cruz remains confident he will return sometime this season. Cruz hasn't played since fracturing his left ankle during an awkward slide home against the Chicago White Sox in early April. The 6-foot-7 Cruz is still using crutches and a walking boot to get around but says he is focusing on coming back better than he was before the injury. Pittsburgh has remained in contention in the NL Central even without Cruz. The Pirates are hovering around the .500 mark thanks in part to the play of reserves Rodolfo Castro and Tucupita Marcano, who are filling in at shortstop while Cruz works his way back.

Pittsburgh has a bit of a history with snagging big-ticket names from Toronto and finding success.
Ke’Bryan Hayes hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the seventh inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied past the St. Louis Cardinals 7-5. Hayes finished off a three-hit night by sending the first pitch he saw from Giovanny Gallegos into the left-field bleachers to give the Pirates the lead. Josh Palacios followed two pitches later with his first career home run as Pittsburgh won its third straight. Carlos Santana had three hits for the Pirates, including a two-run double during a six-run seventh. Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt had three hits each for St. Louis.

Kyle Dubas didn’t stay out of work for long. The Pittsburgh Penguins have hired Dubas as the club’s president of hockey operations. The move comes less than two weeks after Dubas was fired as the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Dubas replaces Brian Burke, who was fired along with general manager Ron Hextall in April after the Penguins failed to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2006.

PITTSBURGH — Thanks to their epic tank job (besides the one they’ve pulled last month), the Pirates have the No. 1 pick in the rapidly approaching MLB draft.
Bryan Reynolds drove in three runs and made a leaping catch against the wall, helping the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the San Francisco Giants 9-4 to climb back above .500. Former Giants Andrew McCutchen and Connor Joe each went 3 for 4 with an RBI as the Pirates (28-27) won consecutive games after dropping below .500 for the first time since they were 1-2. Pittsburgh is 8-19 following a 20-8 start. Mitch Keller (7-1) improved to 4-0 in his last five starts, allowing four runs and 10 hits in six innings with eight strikeouts.

Rookie Patrick Bailey had four RBIs on his 24th birthday, boosting the San Francisco Giants to a 14-4 rout of Pittsburgh that dropped the Pirates under .500 for the first time since the opening weekend of the season. Pittsburgh (26-27) has lost 19 of 25 games after a 20-8 start. The Pirates’ only other time under .500 was at 1-2. Bailey, a catcher who debuted on May 19, was playing his ninth major league game. After hitting a go-ahead, two-run double against 43-year-old Rich Hill in a five-run second inning, he added a two-run homer in an eight-run seventh.

Pierce Bennett, Danny Corona and Bennett Lee each had two RBIs, Rhett Lowder threw five straight hitless innings and top-ranked Wake Forest beat Pittsburgh 10-2 in the ACC Tournament. Wake Forest (46-9), the only team in the nation with fewer than 10 losses, plays No. 8 seed Notre Dame on Friday in the final game of pool play. Lowder, the ACC pitcher of the year for the past two seasons, gave up three hits to the first seven batters, but the only runners to reach after that were two walks and a hit batter. He needed just eight pitches in fifth inning. Lowder finished with six strikeouts in seven innings to earn his 13th victory. Wake Forest tallied 16 hits, with three apiece from Brock Wilken, Bennett and Lee.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have long-term plans to play a regular-season NFL game in Ireland. They touched down in Dublin days after the NFL gave the team marketing rights for Ireland and Northern Ireland as part of the league’s aggressive push to expand its audience internationally. Steelers director of business development and strategy Daniel Rooney says “our aspirations long term are to play a game in Ireland.” Ireland has never hosted a regular-season NFL game but the Steelers beat the Chicago Bears 30-17 in a preseason matchup at Croke Park in 1997.
PITTSBURGH — I’m loathe to agree with Jerry Jones on anything, but the motormouthed Dallas Cowboys owner could not have been more right about the NFL’s decision to make Thursday night football “flexible.”
Alex Highsmith quickly got an education in the business of the NFL as a rookie in 2020. The Steelers had two high-profile contract negotiations that offseason.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed former Arizona Cardinals linebacker Markus Golden to a one-year contract. The deal gives the Steelers some depth behind star edge rushers T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith. The 32-year-old Golden has spent most of his eight seasons in the NFL with Arizona, racking up 47 sacks in 111 games with the Cardinals and New York Giants. Golden had 2 1/2 sacks last year for Arizona while finishing with 48 tackles, tied for the third-highest total in his career.
Martín Pérez pitched seven strong innings, Marcus Semien hit his eighth home run and the Texas Rangers held off the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2. Pérez allowed two runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts to win his fifth straight decision. The 32-year-old left-hander kept the Pirates in check inducing 12 groundball outs, with a pair of inning-ending double plays. Johan Oviedo threw the second “immaculate inning” by a Pittsburgh pitcher this season when he struck out the side on nine pitches in the fourth inning. It wasn't enough for the Pirates to avoid falling to 5-15 in May.
The Atlantic Coast Conference is moving forward allowing schools to earn more money generated from their own postseason performances. That move comes as the league tries to find ways to close a growing financial gap with two power-conference peers. The ACC announced Wednesday that its board of directors have endorsed a “success incentive initiative” for the 2024-25 season. Details are being finalized. The league has long distributed revenue evenly among its membership. TV money will remain equally distributed. The change would affect money coming from revenue-generating postseason events like the College Football Playoff and the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
Noah Martinez hit one of Pittsburgh’s five home runs — a three-run blast — to help the Panthers beat Notre Dame 9-5 in the ACC Tournament. Pitt (24-30), the No. 12 seed, continues pool play on Thursday against the No. 1 team in the country and No. 1 seed in the tournament, Wake Forest. Eighth-seeded Notre Dame (30-23) faces the Demon Deacons on Friday. Kyle Hess hit the Panthers’ third leadoff home run of the game in the seventh inning and Dom Popa followed with their fifth homer to make it 9-4. Pitt broke a program record for most walks in a single season, passing the previously mark of 318 by the 2022 team. The Panthers’ defense also shinned with four double plays.

Eovaldi (6-2) allowed six hits, struck out five and walked one, his fifth straight start of at least seven innings. The 33-year-old right-hander, a 12-year big league veteran. pitched a three-hit shutout in a 2-0 win over the Yankees on April 29. Texas has won four of five.

PITTSBURGH — Kenny Pickett watched what Steelers general manager Omar Khan did over the offseason. He saw the millions of dollars the Steelers spent in free agency and draft capital to strengthen the offensive line and to upgrade the receivers and tight ends rooms.
PITTSBURGH — A few hours before first pitch, Austin Hedges delivered a softly spoken message that was just audible enough for those in the clubhouse to hear.
This is a bit of a new experience for me.
Ke’Bryan Hayes had three hits and three RBIs, Bryan Reynolds homered for the first time in six weeks and drove in four runs and the Pittsburgh Pirates rolled over ace Zac Gallen and the Arizona Diamondbacks 13-3 on Friday night. Michael Lorenzen had a season-high seven strikeouts in six innings, Spencer Torkelson doubled twice and the Detroit Tigers beat the slumping Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0 on Tuesday night. William Byron avoided a wreck between Ross Chastain and Kyle Larson on a restart six laps from the end and held on to win the Goodyear 400 in overtime at Darlington Raceway. Byron was pushed out of the lead by eventual winner Joey Logano two laps from the end here a year ago. This time, Byron watched as Chastain and Larson collided, then drove away from Kevin Harvick for his third win this year and the seventh of his career. It was the 100th win for the No. 24 car of Hendrick Motorsports.
Mitch Keller struck out a career-high 13 in seven innings and the slumping Pittsburgh Pirates won for only the second time in 13 games, 4-0 over the Baltimore Orioles. The Pirates avoided a sweep after dropping the first two games of the series. Pittsburgh was 20-8 after a 16-1 win at Washington on April 29. Then the Pirates scored just 18 runs in their next 12 games. They managed four Sunday without a single extra-base hit, and that was plenty the way Keller was pitching. Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman, who has played in every game this season, pinch-hit in the ninth and popped out to end the game.

Cedric Mullins hit for the cycle for Baltimore, and his three-run homer in the eighth inning helped the Orioles to a 6-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Mullins hit a single in the third, a triple in the fifth and a double in the seventh before completing the cycle with a drive to right in his final plate appearance. He became the seventh Oriole to accomplish the feat and first since Austin Hays on June 22, 2022 against Washington. The Pirates have lost 10 of 11 since starting the season 20-8.

Jurickson Profar had his first multihomer game in four years, Connor Seabold got his first major league win and the Colorado Rockies routed Pittsburgh 10-1, sending the Pirates to their eighth loss in nine games.
