Saltsburg, citing player safety, has forfeited its high school football game against Ligonier Valley that was scheduled for Friday.
“I’m looking at the health, safety and welfare of my kids,” Saltsburg director of athletics and assistant coach Glenn Richards said during a radio interview over the weekend. “I’m looking at the welfare of our students.”
Saltsburg began the season with 19 players on the roster, and one was injured. Two more players went down Friday against Blairsville, leaving the Trojans with only 16 players.
Ligonier Valley, meanwhile, will tie the record of 23 consecutive Heritage Conference victories without playing a game. The Rams won their final Heritage Conference game in 2015 and went undefeated in conference play during each of the past two seasons. Adding four wins this year ties the Rams with the Blairsville teams that won 23 consecutive Heritage Conference games in 2003-05.
Ligonier Valley plays at West Shamokin on Sept. 21. Saltsburg plays host to Penns Manor that evening.
