Six local basketball teams — three girls and three boys — will open the PIAA playoffs Friday and Saturday.

The Penns Manor girls and Saltsburg boys will be the first teams to hit the court.

Penns Manor (23-3) takes on Serra Catholic (17-4) at Central Cambria High School at 6 p.m. Friday in a Class 2A first-round game. Penns Manor is the District 6 runner-up, and Serra Catholic is the fourth-place team out of the WPIAL.

Saltsburg (13-11) faces Cornell (18-7) at 6 p.m. Friday at Fox Chapel High School in the Class 1A bracket. Saltsburg is the third-place team out of District 6, and Cornell is the WPIAKL runner-up.

In Friday’s other game, the United girls square off against Mohawk at 7:30 p.m. at New Castle High School. United (20-6) is the fourth-place team out of District 6, and Mohawk is the WPIAL (22-3) champion.

The Indiana girls hit the road for a Class 4A game Saturday against Lancaster Catholic at Warwick High School in Lititz. Tipoff is at 2:30 p.m. Indiana (14-10) is the seventh-place team out of the WPIAL, and Lancaster Catholic (25-3) is the District 3 champion.

In two boys’ games Saturday, Homer-Center opens its final run under longtime coach Bob Rado, and Ligonier Valley closes out its basketball season as a member of District 6.

Homer-Center (17-9) plays North Star (22-3) at 2:30 p.m. at Pitt Johnstown. Homer-Center is the third-place team out of District 6, and North Star is the District 5 champion.

Ligonier Valley (23-3) faces Carlynton (15-9) at 1 p.m. at Johnstown High School. Ligonier Valley, the District 6 runner-up, is heading to the WPIAL after this school year. Carlynton is the fifth-place team out of he WPIAL.
