For the second time this season, United High School has canceled a varsity football game, this time its homecoming game Friday night against Homer-Center High School.
“Regrettably, due to unforeseen circumstances, Friday evening’s United Varsity Football Game against Homer-Center has been canceled,” the United School District posted on its Facebook page this afternoon.
Homer-Center School District Superintendent Charles Koren said United officials contacted representatives of his district and said they would forfeit the game because of a lack of available players.
“Today Homer-Center received word from United High School that they were forfeiting the football game Friday evening, September 20, 2019,” Koren told the Gazette. “We understand the difficult decision that United had made as well as the rationale they vetted to arrive at this point.
“We recognize that the safety of student-athletes is a concern and that both school communities are disappointed that the game will not be played.”
United officials mentioned no reason for the cancellation on the district’s Facebook page but reported that all related Homecoming events would take place as planned. The coronation would take place at the football stadium at 7 p.m. Friday and the dance would be held at Saturday at the high school gym.
